A group of fifty pupils successfully represented the college at the Embassy Theatre in Skegness.
The Rock Challenge competition is an anti-drug and crime prevention vehicle for schools and colleges
and aims to cpromote a healthy lifestyle through the medium of dance and music.
Groups are asked to create an eight-minute dance-based performance on a theme of their choice,
designing and creating their own costumes and scenery. The basic concept of 'Rock Challenge' is that
through performing in an established venue with professional stage and production staff, the young
people involved realise theydo not need artificial stimulants to achieve this adrenaline rush or 'drug-
free' high.
Lynn Burton, English teacher and leader of the group said:
“This is a concept the college is keen to promote and one I believe has had a positive impact on the students."
Although the College missed out on reaching the next round of the event, the group took the competition by storm,
scooping no less than four awards, winning the Lincolnshire County Council Award for Most Entertaining Performance,
the Ansvar Insurance Award for Best Costume Design, andthe Lincolnshire Co-operative Award for Concept Originality.
Although disappointed the group did not progress further in the competition, Mrs Burton said:
"I am extremely proud of the students, they put on a great performance,
showed dedication throughout and were a credit to the school."
Haven High's entry focused on a 'space' theme. Elizabeth Lyons, Haven's student representative for the day said:
"Our theme of space combined the visions of the 'Be Your Best Foundation'
and UNESCO'S 'International Year of Astronomy 2009'.
Both visions share the idea of a future full of health, wonder and shining opportunities.
Our piece embraced these visions through carefully selected music, representing
the five elements ofthe universe: the sun, planets, moons, asteroids and comets."
Haven's performance on the day would not have been possible without the hard work of all the students who contributed.
However a special mention should go out to all of our student representatives, who consisted of:
Elizabeth Lyons, Charlotte Harness -Knowles, Melissa Vousden, Georgina Gill and Megan Sergeant, who's carefully
answered questions received praise for their drug awareness message, impressing the likes of Lincs FM's John Marshall.
One of the stars of the day was Mitchell Grainger, who wowed the crowd dancing to the music of Michael Jackson's
Billie Jean; and recreating the king of pops signature dance move - The Moonwalk, which later received special praise onLincs
FM! George Mumford's work as lighting director and Tom Sanderson's role as video director's assistant all helped to round of a
professional and polished performance, which will be available on DVD from the college.
