Earlier this term a number of science trips and events took place.
In March thirteen of our Year 11 Additional Science students hired a Lab
run by Bioknex at Biocity, Nottingham This was an opportunity for
students to develop A’level practical skills to solve a murder mystery,
very much like the real CSI.
The workshop allowed our students to play the role of a Forensic
Scientist and make a positive identification simulating the use of real
DNA evidence to identify the murderer.
During the workshop, students analysed six DNA samples; one from the
Crime Scene and five from suspects. After digesting the sample of DNA
with enzymes and separating them using gel electrophoresis, students
compared the DNA patterns in order to match the suspect to the crime scene.
At the University of Leicester in February, The Leicester HER Trust
organised an exciting and interactive event designed to encourage
young girls to consider careers in Science, Engineering, Construction
The day offered our girls the chance to interact with female scientists
and engineers who have achieved successful careers and put their
questions to them. Exhibitors from a whole variety of organisations were
present to offer advice and support in Science, Engineering,
Construction and Technology careers. Lively practical sessions were
planned for in the area of Genetics. In these sessions, girls had the
opportunity to extract DNA from a banana!! When the students weren’t
in practical sessions, they got the chance to talk to PHD students about
Mrs Ayonrinde said,“This was a fabulous opportunity for young women
and girls to see the variety of careers available to them. I hope it inspired
all our girls to consider non-stereotypical careers.”
Students took part in a number of practical
experiments. These looked nto the various factors
that can affect the rate or speed of a chemical
reaction, including: concentration of reactants,
temperature, surface area and different catalysts.
This was a very hands on session in which they all
used a wide range of sophisticated equipment, and
recorded their results for each experiment onto
worksheets
They were accompanied by Miss Porter and Mr
Vallor.
